Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church in Arras

Posted under Arras History

The first church on this site was built in the 12th century under the name “Saint Nicolas des Fossés” since it was constructed on the site of Bastion Saint Nicolas.  In the 16th century, that church was demolished and rebuilt.

During the French Revolution, most churches were sold as national property and subsequently destroyed. This one was spared. In the early 19th century, the church was renamed St. Jean-Baptiste when influential Monseigneur de la Tour d’Auvergne made this church his cathedral.

Destroyed during WWI, it was rebuilt in the Gothic Revival style.
