• Louis de Funès (31st July, 1914 – 27th January, 1983)

He was a French actor who is still considered to be one of the giants of French comedy. His acting style is remembered for its high energy performance, a wide range of facial expressions and an engaging, snappy impatience. In fact, in many of his films, he was playing the role of a middle-aged or older man with a propensity to hyperactivity, bad faith, and uncontrolled anger. Along with his short height and his facial contortions, this hyperactivity produced a highly comic effect.

He was hugely successful in several countries for many years — France, also in French-speaking Canada, Mauritius, Bulgaria, Hungary, Iran, Spain, Germany, Belgium, former Yugoslavia, The Netherlands, Italy, Greece, Poland, Portugal, Albania, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Lebanon, Israel, Turkey, China and the Soviet Union — but remained almost unknown in the English-speaking world. He was only noted in the United States in 1974 with the release of “The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob”. In a 1968 poll, he was voted France’s favorite actor.

In his later years, De Funès suffered from a heart condition after having suffered a heart attack for straining himself too much with his stage antics. He eventually died of a massive stroke. De Funès was said to be a very shy person in real life, unlike the characters he played.

• Jacques Villeret (6th February, 1951 – 28th January, 2005)

Jacques Villeret was a French actor. Born in Loches, Indre-et-Loire, he is most famous for his role as François Pignon in “Le Dîner de cons”, both on the stage and in the later film.

He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris (CNSAD) in the class of Louis Seigner, the grandfather of Emmanuelle Seigner and Mathilde Seigner (famous French actresses). At the time of making the film ‘Un Aller Simple’ directed by Laurent Heynemann – a film about integration and racism and the clash of generations – he said that watching the young actors in the film, Barbara Schulz and Lorant Deutsch, reminded him of the insouciance he had had as a young man with his friends at the Conservatoire. When his career was at its height, with the success of ‘Le Dîner de Cons’ a cruel separation and an enormous financial turnaround to do with tax, plunged him into depression. Alcohol became a problem, which he sought to resolve by isolating himself and hiding away for periods. ‘ Alcohol is a friend, but a friend who means you harm.’

• Dany Boon (born as Daniel Hamidou on 26th June, 1966 in Armentières)

Dany Boon is a French comedian who has acted both on the stage and on the screen. He takes his stage name from the television show Daniel Boone. He is also a screenwriter, director and producer.

Dany Boon first started his career by dubbing cartoons and being a mime in the street. In 1992, he was given his first chance as a comedian by French television personality Patrick Sébastien, who invited him in his TV programme. Since then, Boon has achieved great notoriety with his sketches and his one-man shows.

He was then offered several roles in movies, the most famous being in the film “Joyeux Noël” that propelled him on the international scene in 2005.

Boon, who is deeply attached to his native region, Nord-Pas-de-Calais (in northern France), released in February 2008 a film called “Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis”. Boon wanted this comedy to be based on prejudices that many people have about his region. The film went on to break French box-office records. Two weeks after its release, the film had been seen by five million people. After its fourth week on release, this figure had risen to 15 million viewers. On 11th April 2008, the film surpassed the viewing audience of “La Grande Vadrouille”, having been watched by more than 17.4 million people. To date, only the world-wide blockbuster Titanic has been seen by more people in French cinemas.

Gad Elmaleh is a Moroccan-French one man show humorist and actor. His latest show is called “Papa est en haut” (Dad is upstairs).

• Alain Chabat (born on 24th November, 1958 in Oran, Algeria)

Alain Chabat is a French Jewish actor and director who appeared in “La Cité de la peur”, “Gazon maudit”, “The Taste of Others” and “The Science of Sleep”. His career took off in 1987 when he founded the comedy group “Les Nuls” with Bruno Carette, Chantal Lauby and Dominique Farrugia. Les Nuls’ first outing on French TV (on the paying channel Canal Plus) was a Sci-Fi spoof entitled Objectif Nul, which shares striking similarities with the British TV Series Red Dwarf, although both shows were released at roughly the same time and it is unlikely one influenced the other.

Either as a member of Les Nuls (in La Cité de la Peur) or in his own solo efforts as a director (Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, in which he also acted), Chabat is one of the scarce French comedians who has managed to successfully emulate the heavily referential, pop-culture-based writing style of the Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker trio and adapt it to the tastes of the French audience.

Chabat also voiced the title character in the French dubs of all three Shrek films, replacing Mike Myers.

He won the César Award for Best Debut in 1998 for Didier.

• Bernard Giraudeau (born on 18th June, 1947 in La Rochelle)

Bernard Giraudeau is a French actor, film director, scriptwriter, producer and writer.

Giraudeau was born in La Rochelle, Charente-Maritime. In 1963 he enlisted in the French navy as a trainee engineer, qualifying as the first in his class a year later. He served on the helicopter carrier Jeanne d’Arc in 1964-1965 and 1965-1966, and subsequently on the frigate Duquesne and the aircraft carrier Clemenceau before leaving the navy to try his luck as an actor.

In 2000 he suffered a cancer which led to the removal of his left kidney, with a subsequent metastasis in 2005 affecting his lungs. He has said that the cancer led him to re-evaluate his life and understand himself better. He now devotes some of his time to the support of cancer victims through the Institut Curie and the Institut Gustave-Roussy in Paris.

Gérard Lanvin is a César Award-winning French actor. He stopped his studies when he was 17 to become an actor. He took on a role in “Vous n’aurez pas l’Alsace et la Lorraine” in 1977 on an offer from actor Coluche. He received the Prix Jean Gabin in 1982 for his role in “Une étrange affaire”. In 1995 he won a César Award for Best Actor with “Le Fils préféré”. Other appearances include “Une semaine de vacances” and “3 zéros”. • Jean Dujardin: (born on 19th June, 1972 in Rueil-Malmaison)

Jean Dujardin first reached public consciousness in the French talent show “Graines de star” in 1996 as part of the comedy group “Nous C Nous”, formed by members of the Carré blanc theater. From 1999 to 2003 he starred in the French version of the comedy television series “Un gars, une fille” before transitioning into a film career. In 2005, he starred as the titular character in the popular comedy film “Brice de Nice” and performed the soundtrack of the film, “Le Casse de Brice”. In 2006, Dujardin portrayed the character of Hubert Bonisseur de La Bath in OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies in a role that earned him a César Award nomination for Best Actor, something extremely rare for a performance in comedy.

• Michel Colucci (28th October, 1944 – 19th June, 1986)

Michel Colucci better known as Coluche, was a French comedian and actor, famous for his irresistible sense of humour.

Colucci adopted “Coluche” as a stage name at 26, when he began his entertainment career. He became famous for his irreverent attitude towards politics and the “Establishment”, and he incorporated this into much of his material. He was one of the first major comedians to regularly use profanities as a source of humor on French Television.

Presidential bid:

He attempted to run in the French presidential elections in 1981, but ended up dropping out of the race because of political and media lobbying following polls that showed a significant part of the electorate might vote for him. Some threats to his life were also mentioned.

Restaurants du Cœur:

He created the “Restos du cœur” charity in 1985. It collects food, money and clothes for homeless people.

Death:

Coluche died in 1986 at the age of 41, when his motorcycle crashed into a truck on a road in the commune of Opio in southeastern France. This event provoked a national grief and inspired the album “Putain de camion” (“fuckin’ truck”) by a close friend Renaud Séchan. Some conspiracy theories have since surfaced, mainly in the book “Coluche, l’accident : contre-enquête”, alleging that Coluche may have been murdered.

Awards:

Coluche won the César Award for “Best Actor” for his role in “Tchao pantin” (So Long, Stooge, 1983), one of his very few dramatic roles. He also won the Prix National des Euphémismes de Charente-Maritime (National Prize for Understatements of Charente-Maritime) in 1978, at the third try.

Film:

A film directed by Antoine de Caunes and relating the events surrounding Coluche’s bid for the French presidency in 1981 was released in France in October 2008. François-Xavier Demaison plays Coluche.

• Jean-Paul Belmondo (born on 9th April, 1933)

Belmondo is a French actor initially associated with the New Wave of the 1960s.

Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, west of Paris, Belmondo did not perform well in school, but developed a passion for boxing and football.

His breakthrough role was in Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless (1960), which made him a major figure in the French New Wave. Later he acted in Jean-Pierre Melville’s philosophical movie Leon Morin, Priest (1960) and in Melville’s Film Noir crime film The Fingerman (Le Doulos, 1963) and Godard again with Pierrot le fou. With That Man From Rio (1965) he switched to commercial, mainstream productions, mainly comedies and action films. • Christian Clavier (born on 6th May, 1952 in Paris)

Clavier started his acting career with the theatre troupe “Splendid” and participated in a number of burlesque films, which became hits with films such as “Les Bronzés font du ski” and “Le Père Noël est une ordure“.

His most notable success without the Splendid group, and by far his biggest hit to date, was in the 1993 film “Les Visiteurs”, in which he played a character known as Jacquouille la fripouille.

After “Les Visiteurs” he was a certified star, participating in big-budget films like “Astérix et Obélix contre César”, “Astérix & Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre”, and the sequel and remake of Visiteurs. He also played several dramatic roles on television, including Mr. Thénardier in “Les Misérables” (2000 television version) and “Napoléon” in a biographical television film.

Clavier has played in notable duos with:

• Jean Reno in Les Visiteurs (the Visitors), L’Opération Corned-Beef and L’Enquête corse (The Corsica investigation).

• Gérard Depardieu in Astérix et Obélix (Asterix and Obelix).

He also runs a production company, Ouille Production.

Thierry Lhermitte is a French actor, famous for his roles as a comedian. He was one of the founders of the comedy troupe “Le Splendid” in the 1970s, along with, among others, his high-school friends Christian Clavier, Gérard Jugnot and Michel Blanc. That group adapted a number of its stage hits for the cinema, and scored major successes with films such as “Les Bronzés” (1978), “Les Bronzés font du ski” (1979) and “Le Père Noël est une ordure” (1982).

He has also had a successful career away from Le Splendid, particularly with the films “Les Ripoux” (1984), “La Totale” (1990; remade as True Lies with Arnold Schwarzenegger in Lhermitte’s role) and “Le Dîner de cons” (1998, with Jacques Villeret), among many others.

Jugnot is a French actor, film director, screenwriter and producer.

He was one of the founders of the comedy troupe “Le Splendid” in the 1970s, along with his high-school friends Christian Clavier, Thierry Lhermitte, and Michel Blanc. That group adapted a number of its stage hits for the cinema, and scored major successes with films such as “Les Bronzés” (1978), “Les Bronzés font du ski” (1979) and “Le Père Noël est une ordure” (1982).

He gained international fame for his leading role in “Les Choristes” in which he played Clément Mathieu. He’s directing two movies in 2008-2009: “Faubourg 36″ and “Rose et Noir”.
